5 Steps to Change Your Life

Everyone has an opinion on how to life your best life, and since everyone’s life is different it’s a really individual process. This list will help point you in the right direction.

1. Go to bed early and wake up early.
I was a self-professed night owl for many years. I really believed that I did some of my best work late at night and no one could convince me I’d be more productive or that my life would improve at all if I got up early instead of going to bed late. I was wrong. So wrong. I was more productive almost immediately, and I was blown away. There’s this weird feeling that hits me around 9 or 10 am, where I can reflect on everything I’ve done so far that day already and think, ‘there’s so much day left in this day’. I know it sounds funny, but it’s true. Of course there are circumstances where this does not make sense, where your schedule just doesn’t allow for it. You can find ways to make the concept work for you even if you can’t actually get up at 5 or 6 in the morning. Try getting up an hour or two earlier than you usually do, so you can get a good ‘morning’ routine established, regardless of the actual time.

Making a calm morning routine has improved my whole day.

2. Get active every day.
Being active for at least 30 minutes every day is a good start, and you can work your way up to more. Ideally, you work being active into part of your daily life so you can’t help but get it done every day. Walking and cycling are great options, especially if you have a dog that could join you! Doing a workout outside, even if it’s just going for a walk, is a great combination workout and mood buster. Though really, most workouts are going to boost your mood!

3. Stop the scroll
Social media can be so much fun! Using it to keep up with old friends and being inspired by new ones is what it’s all about, but when you find yourself mindlessly scrolling, it’s time to put it down for later. Setting time limits for your apps, or just setting your phone down away from you during certain times of the day can help you stick to your schedule for the day.

4. Eat clean
If I had to pick a most important step, it would be this one. Eating clean can absolutely change your life on it’s own. By ‘clean’ I mean everything is made from organic, single ingredients. There are all kinds of variations on this, and there is some wiggle room. The idea is just to prioritize what you’re eating. So if your current baseline is a lot of fast food, choosing to cook for yourself instead is always going to be healthier. If you already mostly cook for yourself, upgrade your ingredients to be as clean as possible.

Keep it simple. Use whole, organic foods whenever you can.

6. Keep your space clean and tidy.
This applies to your room, your apartment or your house, depending where you are in your life. It could mean half a dorm room or it could mean a whole house. Prioritize keeping your living space clean and tidy and it will absolutely change your life. You save time looking for things, and it feels good to walk into a clean room and just do whatever it is you went in there to do without clutter taking up space in your mind.

Keeping everything organized makes everything easier.

I hope this list serves as a starting point for you in establishing healthy habits to change your life for the better. I would not have said that my life needed changing when I started with some of these habits but it is so much better now. It’s worth a shot!
